Three Republican lawmakers and one police officer was shot by a lone gunman at a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia by a man identified as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson.

The three lawmakers shot include House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (Republican-Louisiana), a congressional aide, and one former aide who now works as a lobbyist. As of this evening, Scalise remains in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center after undergoing surgery.

Hodgkinson was shot by two Capitol Police officers and later died of his wounds.

The lawmakers were practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game, a charity played against a team of Democrats. The game will be played on Thursday night at Nationals Park.

According to a Reuters article:

Hodgkinson had raged against Trump on social media and was a member of anti-Republican groups on Facebook including, "The Road to Hell Is Paved With Republicans," "Terminate The Republican Party," and "Donald Trump is not my President," a search of his Facebook profile showed.

  1. A sad event. Ironically this brought the two parties together, somewhat, for the moment. This could have been a huge slaughter without the 2 Capitol Police there for Scalise. No one condones this.

In a further irony a UPS facility in San Francisco suffered 5 fatal shootings on the same day by a disgruntled employee. Minimal press coverge due to congressional shooting. Also on Thursday in rural northern New Mexico a 21 year old male fatally shot 5 people including his mother, father, brother.

These mass shootings are virtually a daily occurrence.
