Donald Trump Claims the National Mall Reflecting Pool was Vandalized

Trump's Claims

At 6:59 p.m. on June 19, 2026, Donald Trump posted the following on Truth Social (bold added for emphasis):

We've cleaned, renovated, and beautified over 45 Monuments and Memorials, 28 Statues, and 22 Fountains in Washington, D.C. Things are really looking good in our Nation's Capital, and add to that the fact that when I became President, Crime was rampant, and now, Washington, D.C., is one of the Safest Cities anywhere in the United States. However, we've had some real problems with Vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool, which sits between The Washington Monument and The Lincoln Memorial. Just like three days ago, they destroyed the grass outside of the Pool, they've also done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed. No different than the chemicals that were used on the National Mall, they used something similar in the Reflecting Pool to try to destroy and demean our beautiful work. Lightweight ABC Reporter, Jonathan Karl, was seen sticking his hand into the Pool, and trying to rip the rubber off of the surface.. The algae is 75% gone, and the condition will soon be completely remedied, and the area that was vandalized, fortunately, is just a small area of damage, and will be fixed early next week. It's a shame that the Radical Left Lunatics, most likely Dumocats, who have spent their lives trying to ruin our Country, are free to do so. Law Enforcement is actively investigating this situation, and will hopefully have it resolved soon. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

DONALD J. TRUMP
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

At 3:18 p.m. on June 20, 2026, Donald Trump posted the following on Truth Social (bold added for emphasis):

The United States Park Police have arrested multiple individuals for vandalizing our Nations magnificent Reflecting Pool. Who would do such a thing? These are very serious crimes having to do with the destruction of National Monuments. Years in jail! Work will begin immediately on its repair. President DJT

At 5:36 p.m. on June 20, 2026 Trump posted the following on Truth Social:

Many additional people have been arrested having to do with the disgraceful Vandalism of our beautiful Reflecting Pool. It hasn't looked or worked like this since 1922, when it was originally built, but even then, it leaked badly, and didn't work. Ours worked perfectly, including the mirror like finish, perfectly reflecting the two Great Monuments, which it never had before! What these terrible Vandals have done is a true affront to both Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and should be dealt with accordingly. We met with contractors today, will probably be forced to release and drain much of the water in order to do the necessary repairs, but will have them done as quickly as possible. What they have damaged does not even include the earlier killing of a large amount of grass which was, by far, the least of it. They took some form of knife or blade, and put a 250 foot long gash into the beautiful facade of what took so much work, competence, and money to build and complete. They also poured corrosive and destructive chemicals into the Pool. The Reflecting Pool was never so beautiful as it was just one week ago, even going back to 1922 when it opened. We are very proud of what we have done with this magnificent structure, and we will get it repaired, quickly, to an equal level of Beauty. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

On June 22, 2026, Trump was asked about his vandalism claims by a reporter at the White House. Trump responded saying:

We have vandalism...We have a hundred. We have, I think, a 290, 300 foot slit right through it. Probably a box cutter or a knife of some kind. Or we had people lifting up the basic, uh some of the B [unintelliglble]. It's not a lot of damage. But it's, we'll probably have to let the water out and re-fix it. They went in there with with a knife. Uh, I was just told by the uh. by the people over at parks, they have five people are arrested and five people are under investigation right now. And it's a sad thing. In addition to that, they, you know, we put brand new beautiful grass all around. They put these massive letters on the grass. Uh, you probably know about that, right? And, uh, they said 8647.

When the reporter asked Trump if he has photo and/or video proof that the damage was the result of vandalism, Trump responded:

Yeah, yeah, I have proof. Well, let's put it this way. When you have a 350 I think it's 350, not 250. A 350 foot slit from one end to the other. You think that's proof? All you'd have to do is see the parks department. They'll show it to you. see see uh the secretary, but I saw it. They cut it. They cut it very violently. The same thing with the floor. They cut it and then they lifted it. They pulled it. And that's what it is.

I can't help it if somebody goes in with a knife and starts hacking it up. Uh, and we also have pictures of it. You know, we have [reporter asks "Can you release the photos?"] We, at the right time. You'll see it. You'll see it in court. You'll see it in court. But all you have to do is call the parks department. Call the department of interior. And I don't know if their lawyers will allow you to speak to them, because you know you write fake you write fake news. But uh, call the uh, Interior Department. And I understand they've arrested five people and they have another five people that are under investigation.

At 7:56 a.m. on June 23, 2026, Donald Trump posted the following on Truth Social (bold added for emphasis):

Six people have been arrested, and seven people have been cited, for the damage they did to our Country's now beautiful Reflecting Pool. The 350 foot gash, made by a very sharp knife or razors, is actually numerous slashes over a very long 350 foot length. It was purposefully and criminally done, and somebody had to work very hard, probably in the dark of night, to create such a condition. Likewise, the small area at the bottom of the Pool was cut and powerfully lifted off the surface leaving very jagged, uneven edges. The large areas of grass are being replaced. In any event, even prior to fixing those areas, the Reflecting Pool is as beautiful as it can be. We will drain some of the water, either immediately before or after the Fourth of July, to do the permanent repair. President DONALD J. TRUMP

On June 24, 2026, speaking from the Oval Office Trump said the "vandalism" is the result of "Trump Derangement Syndrome." Trump also said:

They went down with probably a box cutter or a very sharp razor of some kind or a knife, and they cut, and then they started ripping it up. You know why? Because they're sick people. These people should go to jail for a long time.

David Hearn Arrested

David Hearn, a 67-year-old three-time Olympic canoeist, was arrested and detained for five hours on June 19.

Hearn spoke with both ABC News and NBC News about his arrest.

Hearn said he stopped at the reflecting pool at the end of a bike ride because he was curious about all of the recent news reports about algae in the water.

Hearn said:

I saw a piece of this loose end of this blue coating … I reached out and touched the end of that piece that was loose but still attached to the bottom. I was able to reach out and touch the edge of that that was still attached at the bottom and handled it a little bit.

I didn't remove, tear, rip, break or destroy any of it. The condition of the reflecting pool was the same after I stepped away from the water as it was before I got there.

All of a sudden they were handcuffing me behind my back, and they hadn't really told me what I was charged with.

Hearn said the National Guard member who arrested him was unable to answer which federal law he had violated.

Hearn is set to appear in court on July 9.

Reports of Reflecting Pool Vandalism

On June 11, 2026, a very large "8647" appeared as discoloration in an area of grass on the National Mall.

On June 24, 2026, Frank Lands, Deputy Director for Operations the National Park Service, gave a sworn declaration regarding his knowledge of recent damage to the reflecting pool:

On June 9, 2026, after the rehabilitation project was substantially complete, the U.S. Park Police responded to an NPS report of damage to the reflecting pool, including a caulk over the foam sealant that was cut with a sharp knife or razor and destruction of delaminating surface material. In addition, approximately 70 fence post tops were thrown into the pool.

On June 25, 2026, the U.S. Park Police released a video showing a woman kneeling at the side of the reflecting pool, putting one hand into the water, and then retrieving an object.

What Skeptics are Saying

Brian Tyler Cohen posted four videos about this:

Mitch Jackson, a senior partner and founding attorney of Jackson & Wilson (a law firm in Orange County, California) posted an article on Substack entitled "The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Wasn't Vandalized".

Jackson begins his article with the following:

FACT CHECK: Trump is claiming the Lincoln Memorial Reflection Pool was vandalized.

I'm calling bullshit.

The pool is full of algae. The blue paint is peeling off the bottom. It looks exactly like what happens when a project is poorly planned, poorly managed, and poorly maintained.

That's not vandalism.

That's an accountability problem.

Jackson used AI to analyze the reflecting pool controversy. Here's a summary of what AI came up with:

  • EarthCam operates a 24/7, high resolution 5G camera located at the very top of the Washington Monument. The wide angle view looks west across the National Mall, the reflecting pool, and the Lincoln Memorial. The images produced by EarthCam are public, archived, and time-stamped.
  • EarthCam captured the "8647" markings in the grass which proves the camera is working.
  • If Earthcam had captured imagery of vandalism, Trump would have immediately posted images to prove his claim of vandalism.
  • Because the reflecting pool is shallow (barely knee deep) sunlight easily reaches the painted floor across the whole surface and feeds algae directly.
  • An article in The New York Times reported that while renovations were being underway, the treatment system which treats the water in the pool was not running and the pipes connecting it to the pool were not repaired. When the pool was refilled, residual algae out of dormant supply lines entered the pool.
  • Algae has plagued the reflecting pool for decades.
  • Greenwater Services received a no-bid $1.7 million contract to install a nanobubble water purification system in the reflecting pool. Greenwater Services is owned by the J.J. Cafaro Investment Trust and run by John J. Cafaro, a longtime Trump donor and a Mar-a-Lago neighbor who has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to Trump and Trump linked committees. In 2001 and 2010, Cafaro pled guilty to bribery and campaign finance violations, respectively.
  • Greenwater's reflecting pool renovations centered on a blue waterproof coating which failed in trials, producing bubbles and holes at the slab joints where the pool chronically leaks, which is the same coating now peeling into the water.

Read more about Greenwater Services in an article on The New Republic website entitled "How One Shady Firm Is Using Reflecting Pool Renovation as a Cash Grab."

Jackson concludes his article with the following:

And here is the bottom line the AI handed back to me. Trump is doing what he always does. He is dodging the blame and pointing at invisible criminals. The truth is simpler and a lot less flattering.

Nobody sabotaged that pool. The green water came from a rushed, incomplete renovation that ignored the experts and skipped the one repair that actually mattered. That is not vandalism. That is negligence wearing a fresh coat of blue paint.

Commentary:

First, it's clear that some vandalism did in fact occur. The "8647" in the grass, the 70 fence post tops, and the "caulk over the foam sealant that was cut with a sharp knife or razor and destruction of delaminating surface material" mentioned in the sworn declaration of Frank Lands.

But the real controversy here isn't about grass or fence post tops, it's about the algae growth and the supposed cuts made to material in the reflecting pool.

On June 22 Trump claimed "we also have pictures of it [cuts to the reflecting pool material]" but he still hasn't provided any imagery. Why is that?

How likely is it that someone could inflict a "350 foot gash" into the bottom of the reflecting pool? That's longer than the length of a football field!

Trump claims that "many additional people" have been arrested. The news media has not mentioned anything about these "additional" people, and it hasn't reported any names. Why is that?

If David Hearn did in fact vandalize the reflecting pool, why in God's name would he return to the "scene of the crime?" According to his statement, all he did was touch material that was the result of supposed vandalism.

The video released on June 25 is hardly proof of vandalism. Again, why would anyone return to the "scene of the crime" if they had committed vandalism? I think this is nothing more than a curious person, during the day, with other people around, reaching into the pool to perhaps get a small souvenir of the peeling material. The fact that the U.S. Park Police released this video shows just how desperate they are to prove Trump's claims of vandalism. Honestly, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Trump hasn't already talked to the U.S. Park Police, asking them to do everything they can to substantiate his claims.

Again, why has no legitimate, "smoking gun" camera footage been released showing the vandalism in progress? As Mitch Jackson's AI analysis notes, surely Trump would have posted imagery (video or still photos) if they in fact existed. The fact that Trump didn't post anything is really, REALLY good evidence that Trump is just trying to "run cover" for a botched renovation project that he awarded to one of his shady financial supporters.

For the moment I'm with Mitch Jackson.

I'm calling bullshit.
