On Truth Social Donald Trump Calls Jack Smith a "Deranged Animal"

On January 22, 2026 Donald Trump posted the following on Truth Social:

Deranged Jack Smith is being DECIMATED before Congress. It was over when they discussed his past failures and unfair prosecutions. He destroyed many lives under the guise of legitimacy. Jack Smith is a deranged animal, who shouldn't be allowed to practice Law. If he were a Republican, his license would be taken away from him, and far worse! Hopefully the Attorney General is looking at what he's done, including some of the crooked and corrupt witnesses that he was attempting to use in his case against me. The whole thing was a Democrat SCAM — A big price should be paid by them for what they have put our Country through!

Later the same day Donald Trump posted the following on Truth Social:

Based on his testimony today, there is no question that Deranged Jack Smith should be prosecuted for his actions. He destroyed the lives of many innocent people, which has been his history as a prosecutor. At a minimum, he committed large scale perjury!

Trump's posts were in response to former Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith's testimony today at a public congressional hearing regarding his investigation and indictment of Trump.

Smith previously testified at a closed door congressional hearing on December 31, 2025.

Commentary:

Brian Tyler Cohen responded on his YouTube channel saying that Trump's first post, where Trump says "Hopefully the Attorney General is looking at what he's done" is weaponizing the government.

Cohen shows a video clip of House representative Joe Neguse (Democrat-Colorado) questioning Smith, where Neguse tells Smith that Trump is posting on Truth Social in real time as the hearing is in progress. Neguse describes Trump's first post as "weaponization" and "corruption."

It's obvious that Trump's statement mentioning the Attorney General and that Smith should be prosecuted is a blatant dog whistle for the DOJ to open an investigation into Jack Smith. If that happens, then Trump and the DOJ would be doing precisely what Trump send he would end by issuing an executive order entitled "ENDING THE WEAPONIZATION OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT" on his first day in office on January 20, 2025.

Part of that executive order reads:

The American people have witnessed the previous administration engage in a systematic campaign against its perceived political opponents, weaponizing the legal force of numerous Federal law enforcement agencies and the Intelligence Community against those perceived political opponents in the form of investigations, prosecutions, civil enforcement actions, and other related actions. These actions appear oriented more toward inflicting political pain than toward pursuing actual justice or legitimate governmental objectives.

The prior administration and allies throughout the country engaged in an unprecedented, third-world weaponization of prosecutorial power to upend the democratic process.

It is the policy of the United States to identify and take appropriate action to correct past misconduct by the Federal Government related to the weaponization of law enforcement and the weaponization of the Intelligence Community.

Doing a a full analysis of Jack Smith's investigation is a good topic for another post on this website. Suffice it to say for now that Jack Smith did his job and he did it well. It's clear from past media reports that Trump broke the law. Smith had sufficient probable cause to investigate and indict Trump. To claim that his efforts were "weaponization" is complete B.S.

If you disagree, then all I can say is that you are not living in reality. Instead, you are living in Trump's "fantasy world" where Trump is always right, his opponents are always wrong, and objective reality is just something that gets in the way of political goals and personal beliefs.

Trump's Truth Social posts are just another example of Trump's ongoing effort to rewrite history by trying to undo and erase anything and everything that he doesn't approve of. In the real world, you simply can't erase your past wrongdoings.

Trump's post are also just more examples of his ongoing campaign to divide Americans by vilifying his perceived opponents.

If you're one of those who say, "Oh, it's just his personality," that's an indication that you are so deep into the Trump cult that you'll probably never get out. If that's you, it shows that to you, Trump's abrasive, divisive, and vindictive words and actions have become normalized.

If you were able to see objective reality you would realize, in an instant, that words matter, that despite any perceived good that Trump has accomplished, what we've been witnessing for the past ten years is NOT normal, it's NOT in the best interest of the United States or its citizens, and it's NOT in the best interest of our democracy.

Whatever your political ideology, stop and think for a moment how much time, energy, money, and manpower has been invested regarding the actions the dealings of Donald Trump?

What if all of that energy had been directed to actually helping the American people and the world?

Imagine how much good might have been accomplished.

But no.

Because of one sick, vindictive, massively egocentric, deranged person, this is where we are at.

Finally, I receive frequent e-mails from Brian Tyler Cohen (I'm a free subscriber, subscribe here). In an e-mail I received today, Cohen said the following:

The Jack Smith saga is not only a story about the weaponization of the government against political enemies. (The exact thing Trump accused Democrats of doing to him, but that's neither here nor there at this point.)

This is about what Trump's real priorities are. This is about everything that's not getting done while Trump directs his full attention to getting back at his enemies for hurting his feelings.

He's got all the time in the world to prosecute his foes. To wage oil wars in South America. To threaten to invade and annex Greenland. He can host crypto dinners and encrust the Oval Office in gold and build himself a $400 million ballroom and retrofit a new jet for himself. He has time for all of that.

Which is to say, if Trump wants something done, it gets done.

But it's always at the expense of something else. And that something is you, and all the promises Trump made to the American people to get himself elected.

Because while he's rage-tweeting through frivolous prosecutions of his enemies, he's not working to bring down costs, or protect earned benefits. And while he's orchestrating the kidnapping of a world leader and watching like it's reality TV, he's not working to make IVF free, or curb inflation. And while he's suing media companies and going after comedians, he's doing nothing to end the war in Ukraine or release the Epstein files.

If he wanted to do those things, he absolutely would.

But instead he's funneling all of the resources of the federal government - your tax dollars - into going after his enemies in a campaign of retribution that would make Stalin blush.
