JD Vance Shows His Ignorance of World History on National TV

On August 24, 2025, JD Vance sat for an interview with NBC News host Kristen Welker on "Meet the Press."

Vance defended Trump's efforts to use negotiations in an attempt to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.

At one point during the interview Vance said:

If you go back to World War II, if you go back to World War I. If you go back to every major conflict in human history, they all end with some kind of negotiation.

Vance's statement is patently false.

The Vietnam War ended on April 30, 1975, when North Vietnamese forces took control of Saigon.

World War II (in Europe) ended on May 8, 1945, with an unconditional surrender by Germany.

World War II (in the South Pacific) ended on September 2, 1945, with an unconditional surrender by Japan (a direct result of atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki).

The American Civil War ended on April 9, 1865, when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant.

Commentary:

I cited three wars, each of which constitutes a "major conflict in human history." Each of those wars ended not because of negotiations, but because of overwhelming military defeat.

This is the current vice president of the United States, who's next in line to be president, trying to act like he's some kind of world history "scholar," when in fact what he said is just B.S.

He said this, of course, in order to justify Trump's attempt to end the Russia/Ukraine war through negotiations.

I'm all for trying to negotiate, but if you lie and gaslight while doing it, that's not OK, especially if you're the vice president of the United States.

Vance is doing exactly what Trump does all the time by referencing some conspiracy theory, half-truth, or outright lie to justify his policies.

Vance, like Trump, has absolutely no business in the White House. He's proven himself time and time again to be someone who embraces radical ideas, and who speaks as if he's some kind of intellectual who knows it all.

Who does that remind you of?
