Apr 12, 2021:

Yesterday, a suburban Minneapolis police officer shot and killed an unarmed 20-year-old Black man named Daunte Wright during a traffic stop.

Police initially stopped Wright for expired vehicle registration tags, but then attempted to arrest him for an outstanding warrant. The warrant had been issued because Wright previously failed to appear in court on charges that he fled from officers and possessed a gun without a permit during an encounter with Minneapolis police in June.

During the attempted arrest, body cam footage shows the female officer warning Wright by saying "I'll Tase you! I'll Tase you! Taser! Taser! Taser!". Wright broke free of the officer(s) attempting to arrest him, the female officer drew her weapon, and when Wright got back into his vehicle she fired a single shot hitting Wright in the chest. After the gun shot, body cam footage shows the officer saying, "Holy (expletive)! I shot him."

The incident took place in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center.

After watching body cam footage of the incident, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon described the shooting as "an accidental discharge." He also said he believes the officer who shot Wright intended to use her taser instead of her handgun.

By a vote of 3-2, the Brooklyn Center city council gave Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott police department command authority.
