In a televised speech, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he has sent a written request to Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein asking him for immunity from prosecution.

Netanyahu also said the following:

The immunity law is intended to protect elected officials from manufactured cases, and guarantee that those elected by the people can serve the people according to their will and not the will of the legal officials.

Preliminary results show that both Netanyahu's Likud party and Gantz's Blue and White party each won 35 seats in the Knesset (the Israeli "Congress"). But, when looking at the results of all parties, it appears that Netanyahu will be able to secure about 65 of 120 Knesset seats and form a coalition government.

Now that the election is over, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin will consult with all political parties and together decide which candidate (Netanyahu or Gantz) can get the support of at least 61 seats in the Knesset.

With his win, Netanyahu will be the longest serving Prime Minister in Israeli history.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that a snap election will be held April 9, 2019, seven months before the previously scheduled election date in November, 2019.

According to the Israeli government, the main reason for the snap election is due to differences within Netanyahu’s coalition over a new military conscription bill affecting exemptions for ultra-Orthodox Jews.
