A mass shooting in Monterey Park, California has left 10 people dead and at least 10 others wounded.

The shooting took place in the late evening yesterday at the Star Dance Studio during a two-day Chinese Lunar New Year celebration. After the shooting the shooter fled the scene.

About 20 minutes after the shooting, a man entered the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio in nearby Alhambra holding a gun. Another man was able to disarm the man, after which he fled.

Today around 10:00 am in Torrance (about 20 miles from the shooting in Monterey Park) police surrounded a white cargo van. As police approached the driver shot and killed himself.

At a press conference, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said that a search of the van showed evidence linking the dead van driver to both locations in Monterey Park and Alhambra. Luna also said "We still are not clear on the motive."

Police identified the deceased, suspected shooter as Huu Can Tran, a 72-year-old Asian man.

About 65% Asian, Monterey Park is home to one of the largest Asian American communities in the United States.
