United Nations Approves Flying of Palestinian Flag at United Nations Buildings

For the first time, the Palestinian flag was raised at United Nations headquarters in New York City.

Before the flag-raising ceremony, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas addressed the U.N. General Assembly. Abbas said that the Palestinian Authority is no longer bound by the Oslo Accords because Israel supports settlements of Israelis in the West Bank and refuses to release Palestinian prisoners.

By a vote of 119 for, 8 against, and 45 abstaining, the United Nations General Assembly voted in favor of a resolution to allow the flying of the Palestinian flag at United Nations buildings. Israel and the United States both voted against the resolution, and the United Kingdom abstained.
