2016 Election | New Leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate

Nov 30, 2016:

By a vote of 134 to 63 (68% of the vote), Nancy Pelosi defeated challenger Tim Ryan to retain her position as Democratic minority leader in the House of Representatives.

Nov 17, 2016:

House Representative Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) announced he would challenge Nancy Pelosi (D-California) for House minority leader.

Nov 16, 2016:

Republicans in the Senate reelected Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) as Senate majority leader.

Democrats in the Senate elected Charles Schumer (D-New York) as the new Senate minority leader, replacing Harry Reid (D-Nevada) who is retiring.

Nov 15, 2016:

Republicans in the House of Representatives unanimously nominated Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) for a full two-year term as Speaker of the House. Members of the House will officially cast their votes for Ryan on December 3.

Republicans also reelected House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California).

House Democrats decided to postpone House leadership elections until after Thanksgiving.
