Canadian Senate Passes Bill to Legalize Marijuana

Jun 20, 2018:

Today in Canada, by a vote of 52-29, the Senate passed bill C-45, the Cannabis Act, which legalizes marijuana. As soon as the bill receives Royal Assent the bill will become law.

Canada is the second country to legalize marijuana (Uruguay legalized it in December 2013).

Legalization means that adults (minimum 18 years old) will be able to:

  • carry and share up to 30 grams of legal marijuana in public
  • cultivate up to four plants in their households
  • prepare products such as edibles for personal use

Regarding the sale of marijuana:

  • consumers are expected to purchase marijuana from retailers regulated by provinces, territories, or federally licensed producers
  • marijuana will not be sold in locations that also sell tobacco and alcohol
