A man with a shotgun shot and killed five people and wounded two others in the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland.

Police took the suspect, 38 year-old Jarrod W. Ramos, into custody.

In 2011, Ramos pleaded guilty to criminal harassment. His 90-day jail sentence was suspended and he received 18 months supervised probation.

In July, 2012, representing himself, Ramos sued the Capital Gazette, Eric Hartley (the reporter who wrote the article), and Thomas Marquardt (the newspaper's publisher) on charges of defamation. In 2013, his lawsuit was dismissed because he didn't show that anything that was said about him in the article was false. His appeal in 2015 was also dismissed for the same reason.

Neither Hartley or Marquardt were present during the shooting.
