In Hungary, Viktor Orbán Loses Election to Center-Right Rival Péter Magyar

On April 12, 2026, after 16 years as Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán conceded after losing his reelection bid to center-right rival Péter Magyar.

Prior to the election, independent polls suggested that Orbán's Fidesz party might lose to Magyar's pro-European Union Tisza party.

Orbán is a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Orbán's so called "illiberal democracy" policies are in line with Trump and the MAGA movement in the U.S.

With 93% of the vote counted, Magyar's Tisza party had more than 53% support compared with 37% for Orbán's Fidesz party, making it still unclear as to whether the Tisza party will have a two-thirds majority in the Hungarian parliament.

On April 7, just five days before today's election, JD Vance was in Hungary speaking in support of Orbán, calling it "disgraceful" that "outside forces" were trying "to put their thumb on the scale" of Hungarian politics.

Vance also said "What has happened in the midst of this election campaign is one of the worst examples of foreign election interference that I've ever seen or ever even read about."

Commentary:

Orbán's defeat should give hope to each and every American citizen who is so fed up with Trump, his sycophants, and MAGA that they could scream.

Orbán's defeat is a harbinger of what's in store for Trump and MAGA in the 2026 U.S. mid-term elections.

Vance's statements about other countries interfering in the Hungarian election, when Vance himself is in Hungary supporting Orbán is just another example of the off-the-scale hypocrisy and lack of awareness of Vance and everything he, Trump, and MAGA stand for. Vance is a blundering idiot!
