Rescue workers found three more bodies in the bridge wreckage, bringing the total number of people dead to 43.

Bridge construction was completed in 1967, some major repairs were done during the 1990's, and some restructuring work was done in 2016. Work to shore up the bridge's foundation was being carried out at the time of the collapse.

Possible reasons stated for the collapse include:

  • heavy storms at the time of the collapse
  • structural damage and/or design flaws
  • heavy traffic on the bridge

In 2016, Antonio Brencich, a structural engineer who lectures at Genoa University, said there are "errors" in the bridge and that "sooner or later" it would have to be replaced.

Italian Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli called for "top management" resignations at Autostrade per l'ltalia, the Italian highways agency which operates the bridge. Autostrade said that the bridge was constantly monitored and supervised, that the collapse was "unexpected and unpredictable", and that there was no cause for alarm.
