U.S. Supreme Court Decides Against Two Provisions of 2013 Texas Abortion Law

Jun 27, 2015

By a vote of 5-3, the U.S. Supreme Court decided to block two key provisions of a 2013 Texas abortion law. The first provision requires doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. The second provision requires abortion clinics to meet the same standards as hospital-like surgical centers.

Justices Stephen Breyer, Anthony Kennedy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan voted against. Justices John Roberts, Samuel Alito, and Clarence Thomas voted for.

The state of Texas argued that the law was enacted to improve minimum safety standards and ensure quality care for patients. Abortion clinics argued that the law was just a way to force the closure of many of the abortion clinics in the state of Texas.
