2016 United States Presidential Candidate Marco Rubio

Jan 6, 2016

In a TV Ad, Marco Rubio talks openly about his Christian faith and Jesus Christ:

Our goal is eternity - the ability to live alongside our Creator and for all time - to accept the free gift of salvation offered to us by Jesus Christ. The struggle on a daily basis as a Christian is to remind ourselves of this. The purpose of our life is to cooperate with God's plan. To those whom much has been given much is expected, and we will be asked to account for that. Are your treasures stored up on Earth or in heaven? And to me, I try to allow that to influence me in everything that I do. I'm Marco Rubio and I approved this message.

During a campaign speech at an American Legion post in Hooksett, New Hampshire, Marco Rubio characterized the other GOP presidential candidates as 'isolationists…more passionate about weakening our military and intelligence capabilities than about destroying our enemies'.

Rubio also said 'Barack Obama has deliberately weakened America. He has made an intentional effort to humble us back to size'.

In an interview with David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network, Marco Rubio, when asked by Brody about the recent same-sex marriage ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court said the following:

So it is the current law. It is not settled law. No law is settled. Roe v Wade is law but it doesn’t mean that we don’t continue to aspire to fix it because we think it's wrong, and in the interim, until we can get a Supreme Court to overturn Roe versus Wade, we do everything possible within the constraints that's placed upon us to confront it and certainly limit the number of abortions and save as many lives as possible.

I think the broader question is 'What is our role in terms of confronting it?' And again, if you look at biblical lessons, the first thing is we are clearly called in the Bible to adhere to our civil authorities, but that conflicts with our requirement to adhere to God's rules, and so when those two come in conflict, God's rules always win. In essence, if we are ever ordered by a government authority to personally violate and sin, violate God's law and sin, if we’re ordered to stop preaching the gospel, if we are ordered to perform a same-sex marriage as someone presiding over it, we are called to ignore that. We cannot abide by that cause government is compelling us to sin.

Commentary:

Marco Rubio talks about God's rules and the Bible as if these are the ultimate "laws of the land" in the United States. It's obvious that the God he is referring to is the Christian God, which is not the "official" God of the United States. Nor is the God he is referring to necessarily the God of your neighbor next door, your brother-in-law, an atheist, or people who practice other faiths.

My point is, Rubio is taking his own personal religious beliefs, which are obviously based on Christianity and the Bible, and trying to impose them on all Americans. That's a violation of the concept of separation of church and state, What he's saying starts to sound more like a theocracy and not a democracy which is the form of government we have in the United States.
