The 2014 Ebola outbreak in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, is the largest outbreak of Ebola in history.

As of January 20, 2016 there have been 28,602 total cases (15,216 confirmed, 2,619 probable, and 10,767 suspected) and 11,301 deaths associated with Ebola in West Africa.

As of May 11, 2016 there have been 28,616 total cases (15,227 confirmed, 2,622 probable, and 10,767 suspected) and 11,310 deaths associated with Ebola in West Africa. More than 10,000 people have survived the disease.

The first known case of Ebola was a young two-year-old boy living in Guinea named Emile Ouamouno. Because Emile is the first known case, he is referred to as "Patient Zero". It is believed that Emile contracted the Ebola virus from fruit bats which were taking refuge in nearby trees.

Jan 14, 2016:

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the end of the most recent outbreak of Ebola in Liberia. The WHO declared Liberia Ebola-free on May 9 of last year, but the virus was reintroduced twice since then.

Today also marks the first time that the three countries hardest hit by the Ebola virus (Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone) have reported zero cases for at least 42 days.

Dec 30, 2015:

Yesterday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Guinea to be free of the Ebola virus.

Nov 7, 2015:

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Sierra Leone to be free of the Ebola virus.

Aug 4, 2015:

The government of Liberia ordered that all bodies of people killed by the Ebola virus must be cremated.

Jul 16, 2015:

A total of six new cases of Ebola have emerged in Liberia since the World Health Organization announced that country Ebola-free on May 9, 2015.

Jun 29, 2015:

A deceased man tested positive for the Ebola virus in Liberia.

May 9, 2015:

The World Health Organization released a statement entitled "The Ebola outbreak in Liberia is over".

Mar 5, 2015:

The World Health Organization announced there have been no new cases of Ebola in Liberia for one week. According to the WHO, a country has to have no new cases for 42 days to be declared Ebola-free.
