Dec 31, 2020:

Dec 30, 2020:

Republican Senator Ben Sasse (Nebraska) posted a long, detailed response on Facebook as to why he will not be supporting the planned contestation of the 2020 election results by a group of congressmen on January 6. In the response, Sasse asks seven important questions, then gives his answer to each one. Here is an excerpt of his response:

1. IS THERE A CONSTITUTIONAL BASIS FOR CONGRESS TO DISMISS ELECTORAL COLLEGE VOTES?

Yes. A member of the House and the Senate can object and, in order for the vote(s) in question to be dismissed, both chambers must vote to reject those votes. But is it wise? Is there any real basis for it here? Absolutely not.

2. IS THERE EVIDENCE OF VOTER FRAUD SO WIDESPREAD THAT IT COULD HAVE CHANGED THE OUTCOME OF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION?

No. For President-Elect Biden's 306-232 Electoral College victory to be overturned, President Trump would need to flip multiple states. But not a single state is in legal doubt.

3. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CLAIMS OF THE PRESIDENT'S LAWYERS THAT THE ELECTION WAS STOLEN?

I started with the courts for a reason. From where I sit, the single-most telling fact is that there a [sic] giant gulf between what President Trump and his allies say in public – for example, on social media, or at press conferences outside Philadelphia landscaping companies and adult bookstores – and what President Trump's lawyers actually say in courts of law. And that's not a surprise. Because there are no penalties for misleading the public. But there are serious penalties for misleading a judge, and the president's lawyers know that – and thus they have repeated almost none of the claims of grand voter fraud that the campaign spokespeople are screaming at their most zealous supporters. So, here's the heart of this whole thing: this isn't really a legal strategy – it's a fundraising strategy.

4. WAIT, ARE YOU CLAIMING THERE WAS NO FRAUD OF ANY KIND THIS YEAR?

No...There is some voter fraud every election cycle...But the crucial questions are: (A) What evidence do we have of fraud? and (B) Does that evidence support the belief in fraud on a scale so significant that it could have changed the outcome? We have little evidence of fraud, and what evidence we do have does not come anywhere close to adding up to a different winner of the presidential election.

5. BUT ISN'T IT IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST TO INVESTIGATE THESE CLAIMS MORE THOROUGHLY? DOESN'T IT HELP GUARANTEE THE LEGITIMACY OF OUR ELECTORAL PROCESS?

I take this argument seriously because actual voter fraud – and worries about voter fraud – are poison to self-government. So yes, we should investigate all specific claims, but we shouldn't burn down the whole process along the way...We have good reason to think this year's election was fair, secure, and law-abiding. That's not to say it was flawless. But there is no evidentiary basis for distrusting our elections altogether, or for concluding that the results do not reflect the ballots that our fellow citizens actually cast.

6. DO ANY OF YOUR COLLEAGUES DISAGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THIS?

When we talk in private, I haven't heard a single Congressional Republican allege that the election results were fraudulent – not one. Instead, I hear them talk about their worries about how they will "look" to President Trump's most ardent supporters...Nonetheless, it seems to me that the best way we can serve our constituents is to tell the truth as we see it, and explain why. And in my view, President-Elect Biden didn't simply win the election; President Trump couldn't persuade even his own lawyers to argue anything different than that in U.S. federal courts.

…WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

Let's be clear what is happening here: We have a bunch of ambitious politicians who think there's a quick way to tap into the president's populist base without doing any real, long-term damage. But they're wrong – and this issue is bigger than anyone's personal ambitions. Adults don't point a loaded gun at the heart of legitimate self-government. We have a deep cancer in American politics right now: Both Republicans and Democrats are growing more distrustful of the basic processes and procedures that we follow. Some people will respond to these arguments by saying: "The courts are just in the tank for Democrats!" And indeed the President has been tweeting that "the courts are bad" (and the Justice Department, and more). That's an example of the legitimacy crisis so many of us have been worried about...All the clever arguments and rhetorical gymnastics in the world won't change the fact that this January 6th effort is designed to disenfranchise millions of Americans simply because they voted for someone in a different party.

Trump posted a video on Twitter asking Congress to send him a new COVID-19 relief bill. Here are excerpts of what he said:

A few months ago, Congress started negotiations on a new package to get urgently needed help to the American people. It's taken forever. However, the bill they are now planning to send back to my desk is much different than anticipated. It really is a disgrace.

Despite all of this wasteful spending and much more, the $900 billion package provides hardworking taxpayers with only $600 each in relief payments, and not enough money is given to small businesses, and in particular restaurants, whose owners have suffered so grievously.

After acknowledging Joe Biden's Electoral College win over Trump, televangelist Pat Robertson said the following about Trump:

You know, with all his talent and the ability to raise money and grow large crowds, the president still lives in an alternate reality. He really does...People say, 'Well, he lies about this, that,' but, no, he isn't lying. To him, that's the truth.

Source:

Choi, Joseph. (December 21 2020). "Pat Robertson says Trump lives in 'alternate reality' and Biden will be president". The Hill. Retrieved 2020-12-21.

Commentary:

So, according to Robertson Trump hasn't been lying all this time because what Trump says he himself believes to be true. If you live in an "alternate reality" and you have your own set of facts and beliefs, then even if you say things that are de facto lies, you're not lying. Have I got that right?

Apparently, Robertson is trying to differentiate between a "lie" and a "liar", and I understand his point. But my point is, IT DOESN'T MATTER whether or not you believe your own B.S. Either way it's still B.S. And in Trump's case, his lies and B.S have had an incalculable, detrimental effect.

It sounds like Robertson is, perhaps, trying to cut Trump "a little slack" on this one. But here's the thing: the only person who knows, 100% for sure, whether Trump actually believes his lies is Trump himself. How does anyone, other than Trump, know for sure he's not just lying KNOWINGLY? Just because he lives in an "alternate reality" doesn't necessarily mean he believes all his "lies" to be truth as Robertson said. It's just as possible, and highly probable, he lies for the simple reason of trying to blur the line between fact and fiction for political gain.

Robertson's reasoning is just one example of how Christians try to "justify" their support of Trump. Of course with Trump, there is no justification.

We have a governor, Republican governor, that's worse than a Democrat. He's terrible, and he's hurting Kelly and David very badly, the senators that are terrific people.

We never get a chance to prove it [election fraud] because a judge will say, 'Well, I'm sorry, you don't have standing.'

Commentary:

Part of Trump's modus operandi is to blame everyone and everything else for anything that doesn't go his way. In this case, what he's really doing is "preemptively blaming" legislators and Supreme Court justices if they don't have the "courage to do what everybody in this country knows is right."

NO, not "everybody" in America believes Trump's nonsense. Biden received about 81 million votes compared to Trump's approximately 74 million votes. How does this translate into "everybody?" Obviously, it doesn't. It's just another Trump lie and further evidence of Trump's delusional state of mind.

Here are a few Trump excerpts from the nearly two-hour long Valdosta rally:

Very simply, you will decide whether your children will grow up in a socialist country or whether they will grow up in a free country. And I will tell you this, socialist is just the beginning for these people. These people want to go further than socialism. They want to go into a communistic form of government. I have no doubt about it.

They cheated and they rigged our presidential election, but we will still win it. We will still win it. We'll still win it. And they're going to try and rig this election too...We just need somebody with courage to do what they have to do because everyone knows it's wrong. We need somebody with courage, somebody that makes decisions, then we'll be going up to the Supreme Court very shortly.

As the great pollster, John McLaughlin, who was really a great pollster, one of the most highly respected, he said, "There's no way this could have happened other than the obvious cheating or a rigged election. There's no way it could have happened."

Well, actually I won Wisconsin...And by the way, the swing States that we're all fighting over now, I won them all by a lot. I won them all by a lot. And I have to say, if I lost I'd be a very gracious loser. If I lost, I would say I lost and I'd go to Florida, and I'd take it easy, and I'd go around and I'd say, "I did a good job." But you can't ever accept when they steal and rig and rob. You can’t accept it.

Your governor could stop it very easily if he knew what the hell he was doing. He could stop it very easily. Hundreds of thousands of illegal votes were cast in each state...And we said, have this brought back into your legislature, governor, have it brought back. Let these people make it. Keep it open, keep it transparent, and let us have a signature verification. What's wrong with that? They keep counting the same votes. I said, "Don't count votes, look at the signature. You're going to find the signatures aren't what they were two years ago, four years ago, six years ago."

The radical Democrats, if they get power, they will immediately abolish the Senate filibuster, allowing them to pass any bill they want and giving them free rein to ram through the most extreme left-wing agenda ever conceived while at the same time, destroying our military through a lack of funding...If these people get control, their draconian, military cuts will devastate Fort Benning, Fort Gordon, and the military families all across Georgia...They will impose total open borders so that people can pour into our country and they will give them free healthcare, free welfare, and the right to vote in your elections. You won't ever win another election as a Republic...The radical Democrats will implement nationwide catch and release...And install sanctuary cities all across the country, that's what they want, freeing criminal aliens and MS-13 gang members, the most vicious people...They'll confiscate privately owned firearms...And they will totally cut up a thing called your second amendment rights...The extreme left will pack the Supreme Court with 24 radical Justices. That's the last number I heard. I used to hear it was 16, now it's up to 24...But they want to destroy the sanctity of the Supreme Court, the importance of the Supreme Court, the majesty of the Supreme Court. They'll terminate religious liberty, cancel free speech, and force you to fund extreme late-term abortion. And there will be nothing to stop them. If they [Kelly Loeffler and David Purdue] don't get in, there's going to be nothing to stop them. You have no idea how bad it will be...They will unilaterally surrender to China...They'll wage war on American energy. Absolutely decimating Georgia's middle-class.

If the other side manages to steal both elections, we will have total, one party, socialist control and everything you care about will be gone. Your whole philosophy is going to be gone...No oil, no guns. No God...They want to take away your jobs, take away your borders, take away your freedom, take away your religion. And they even want to take away your beautiful Christmas that we just got back...This election is about the radical left movement that hates America and wants to erase our history and wipe away everything that we hold dear.

As you know a major issue in this state is voter fraud, it's been a big issue for a long time but never like this. We sent out tens of thousands, millions and millions of ballots. Nobody knew where they came from, where they are, people were getting two, three, four ballots. They were signing them, sending them in, what a mess. And I said it a year ago and I said it every month and I even said, "Let's postpone the election," and they said, "Oh, he's not at American." They knew what they were doing. They knew what they were doing...They can only win if they cheat, they can't win this state unless they cheat and they cheat better than anybody.

The left lies, they cheat and they steal. They are ruthless and they are hellbent on getting power and control by any means necessary. They investigate you and they prosecute you. The moment you question them, they try and intimidate you. They call you a poor American. You're not a good American. You don't love our country. They don't love our country. They beat you down, shut you up and make you retreat. That's what they do. That's what they've done to your governor. They've done that to your governor. Your governor should be ashamed of himself. That's what they want to do right here in Georgia. They want you to be quiet. They want you to go away, but we don’t go away. We don't go.

It's the biggest open secret in America that Democrats cheat in elections, this year by sending out 65 million mail-in ballots. They perpetrated the largest fraud in the history of our country. Democrat officials and politicians in every swing state, systematically weakened every measure to combat election fraud. They ensured that there were no identity checks, no signature checks.

This is our country that they are… and you know this and you see it, but they're trying to take it from us through rigging, fraud, deception, and deceit. That's what we saw in the election. That's what's going on, and it's happening right now in our country. We will do something about it, and we're going to do something about it quickly. We'’re going to be watching on January 5th, we're going to be watching every element of what they do. This fraud that they perpetrated on our country, we're going to be watching it more closely than any election has ever been watched. Hopefully, our legislatures and the United States Supreme Court will step forward and save our country.

Trump tweeted the following:

Looks like certain Republican Senators are getting cold feet with respect to the termination of Big Tech's Section 230, a National Security and Election Integrity MUST. For years, all talk, no action. Termination must be put in Defense Bill!!!

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the following about William Barr:

He hasn't done anything, so, he hasn't looked. When he looks, he'll see the kind of evidence that right now you are seeing in the Georgia Senate. They are going through hearings right now in Georgia and they are finding tremendous volumes. So, they haven't looked very hard. Which is a disappointment, to be honest with you, because it's massive fraud.

When asked about his confidence in Barr, Trump said:

Ask me that in a number of weeks from now. They should be looking at all of this fraud. This is not civil. He thought it was civil. This is not civil. This is criminal stuff. This is very bad criminal stuff.

Trump delivered a 46-minute speech about 2020 election fraud in a Facebook video.

Commentary:

With his 46-minute video, Trump is going "all in" and way, way beyond to try and inflate his claims of election fraud into the worst election catastrophe in U.S. history. He's doing this for two reasons. One, to try to get "faithless electors" (and possibly some "sympathy" from the U.S. Supreme Court, should any of his cases make it that far), and two, because his gargantuan ego just cannot, in any way shape or form, accept the fact that he was defeated by the "worst candidate" in history, Joe Biden.

If Joe Biden is in fact the "worst" as Trump has said, with Trump's loss, what does that say about Trump?

Dec 1, 2020:

In an interview with the Associated Press, U.S. Attorney General William Barr said the following:

To date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have affected a different outcome in the election.

There's been one assertion that would be systemic fraud and that would be the claim that machines were programmed essentially to skew the election results. And the DHS [Department of Homeland Security] and DOJ [Department of Justice] have looked into that, and so far, we haven’t seen anything to substantiate that.
